Bridging Cultures in Outdoor Health: Insights from Multicultural Programs in Melbourne's Western Suburbs

The Western Suburbs of Melbourne represent one of Australia's most culturally diverse communities. Recognizing the unique needs and backgrounds of this population, Out Doors Inc began offering tailored outdoor health and respite programs in 2021, specifically designed for carer groups, senior citizens, and adults with mental health conditions within these communities. This presentation aims to provide an in-depth exploration of our experiences and insights gained from working with these diverse groups, along with practical lessons for improving inclusivity in the outdoor health sector.

We will ground our discussion in relevant theories and research concerning people of color and their relationship with nature and outdoor environments. This foundational knowledge has informed our approach, helping us understand the various cultural perspectives and historical contexts that may influence individuals’ interactions with outdoor spaces. These considerations are essential when designing outdoor leisure and wellness programs that genuinely meet the needs of multicultural communities.

In addition to discussing general approaches, we will present a case study focusing on a program delivered to a community group from the Horn of Africa. This case study highlights both the opportunities and challenges encountered when working with individuals from different cultural backgrounds, such as varying attitudes toward outdoor recreation, differing comfort levels, and unique expectations for engagement.

By sharing our experience and lessons learned, we hope to contribute to the growing body of knowledge on inclusive practices in outdoor health and wellness. Our goal is to support the outdoor health sector’s capacity to effectively reach and engage marginalized communities, ultimately fostering a more inclusive approach to mental health and well-being through nature-based interventions.
