How a year in a remote town in the Northern Territory has influenced my therapy practice.
Description
To develop personally and professionally, in January 2025 Kim packed up life on her farm near Geelong, shut her private practice, and moved to Nhulunbuy NT. She left behind everything she knew for one of the biggest adventures and challenges of her life.
Kim has be working there all year as a child and family therapist. This is her story about the experience so far. Kim will share stories of wonder, loneliness, contemplation, doubt, resilience, skill building, amusement, joy, exploration, challenges, and gratitude.
Kim would like to share what she has learnt about herself, the non-aboriginal community, the aboriginal community, and the relationships between all 3. She has been able to learn a bit about the local aboriginal culture and way of being, and is gradually incorporating this into her work. Kim wants to gain an understanding and knowing about how the Yolngu nation communities live and interact with country and each other. What helps them to heal and how we can blend this with western therapy ideologies. This will not only help Kim in her work as a therapist in the NT, but she hopes to be able to bring some of that knowing back with her and share it with non-aboriginal clients.
Session Outline
This workshop is open for others to share their experiences, as well as to share any information, advice or insight for anyone thinking of moving to work in a remote community. It is a life changing experience but it also a big decision that requires many considerations as well as preparation. Kim hopes that you will enjoy her yarn of her big adventure.
